This is a rather simple piece that was drawn to replace another that is already in my gallery on my site. I do like elderly portraits and so I could keep both of them quite happily, but, no, I’ll show some restraint and keep this one.
I didn’t necessarily want to replace it but it brings me back to saga of sketchbooks last year where I found that my new sketchbook, which should be good, was damaged, so it was rather useless.
Hence, most of the things I’ve drawn with it are also rather useless. Luckily enough this was an idea that was quite universal so I could easily recreate it, which may not have been possible for something like The Sacred Cow v2.
Then again it’s arguable if I could produce something of that quality on damaged paper.
However- I digress. This is a rather simple piece which focuses on elderly portraits, and the details, and wrinkles, therein. That said it’s not very simple at all as there are so many wrinkles.
It’s also a style test of sorts as I want to bring this hatching style to light (no pun intended) and really expand on using it. It’s an effective style but it requires a certain amount of control to be of any use. It’s hard to see that, or use it, without understanding it first, and so I learn by practice.
Not what I would usually do- but there’s nothing wrong with trying something new.
I think this also bleeds over the semi-realism? Eh, who knows. It is what it is.
I’ve had a rather productive start to 2012 when it comes to art and I’m really quite proud of the leaps in technical detail I can see. Even from things that, six months ago, I really did love. So- who knows- maybe I’m getting to feel like I’m a half-decent artist?
Oh, and, as for the presentation with the angular-thingy, that’s mostly because I was tired of cropping out half body shots so I figured I’d try something a little different.
Your thoughts are, as always, appreciated, and valued.
